Benzema puts Ronaldo-less Real Madrid back on top
1:42 PM Unknown
Madrid - Karim Benzema scored twice as Real Madrid made light of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale's absence to move back to the top of La Liga with a 4-1 win at SD Eibar on Saturday.
Benzema proved decisive when he was needed most by the European champion without his usual strike partners as the Frenchman finished twice from close range inside the first 25 minutes.
James Rodriguez completed a perfect first half for the visitor from Benzema's low cross.
Marco Asensio grabbed Madrid's fourth before Ruben Pena pulled back a consolation for Eibar.
Madrid leads Barcelona by two points, but the Catalans can go back to La Liga's summit with victory at home to Celta Vigo later on Saturday.
Despite the absence of Ronaldo and Bale through injury and suspension respectively, Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane rested a host of other first-team regulars ahead of Tuesday's Champions League last-16 return leg away to Napoli.
Madrid travels to Italy carrying a 3-1 lead, but Zidane took no risks as Marcelo, Dani Carvajal, and Toni Kroos were left on the bench.
Those coming in rewarded Zidane's faith in the depth of his squad with the often sidelined Rodriguez a constant threat.
The opener arrived on 14 minutes when Asensio was played in down the left by Rodriguez and his low cross found Benzema unmarked at the far post.
Benzema's first effort was well saved by Yoel, but the Madrid No. 9 followed up to register just his second league goal since October.
The visitors nearly had a second moments later when Rodriguez's low cross was just flicked out of Benzema's reach by the Eibar goalkeeper.
However, Madrid did soon double its advantage when Rodriguez's wicked in-swinging free-kick left Benzema with the simplest of tasks to knock the ball home from point-blank range.
Four minutes later the roles were reversed as this time Benzema's low cross was swept into the far corner on the stretch by Rodriguez for his fifth goal of the season.
Only Yoel prevented Eibar, who had come into the game in fine form in seventh in the table, from further punishment before half-time as he made a fine double save from Benzema and Asensio.
Benzema should have had his first hat-trick of the season three minutes into the second half but pulled his shot well wide from Nacho's cushioned header.
Asensio had unselfishly squared to Rodriguez in the move for the fourth goal, but after the Colombian's effort came off the post, Asensio expertly dispatched the rebound from a narrow angle.
Eibar did finally have something to cheer 18 minutes from time when Pena beat Danilo to Pedro Leon's cross to the far post to fire in a consolation.

Real Madrid announce squad for La Liga match against Eibar
No Cristiano Ronaldo. No Gareth Bale.

*********************************************************************************
Real Madrid just published the squad list for Saturday's match against Eibar (10:15 Am EST).
REAL MADRID'S SQUAD LIST:
Goalkeepers: Navas, Casilla and Yáñez.
Defenders: Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Nacho, Marcelo and Danilo.
Midfielders: Kroos, James, Casemiro, Kovacic, Modric, Asensio and Isco.
Attackers: Benzema, Lucas Vázquez and Mariano.
Cristiano Ronaldo will not travel to the team as he missed Friday's training session. Gareth Bale will also miss the game after being suspended because of the red card he saw on Wednesday's match against Las Palmas, meaning that Zidane will have to trust his reserves if Madrid want to get the win and bounce back from the discouraging home draw against Las Palmas. However, striker Alvaro Morata will not be one of those men who need to step up, as he will also miss the game with a suspension.
Real Madrid won't have much depth on the offensive line and players like Benzema, James Rodriguez and Lucas Vazquez will need to perform well.

GARETH BALE SORRY FOR SENDING OFF BUT DOES NOT BELIEVE IT WAS A RED CARD

Real Madrid star Gareth Bale believes his red card against Las Palmas was harsh, as he asked for forgiveness.
The Wales international was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in a matter of seconds in the 47th minute on Wednesday.
Bale was initially booked for a foul on Jonathan Viera before pushing the Spaniard, leading to his sending off.
Only a late Cristiano Ronaldo brace salvaged a 3-3 draw for Madrid and Bale felt he was harshly done by.
"The first thing I have to say is that I don't think it's red," he told Real Madrid TV, via AS.
Bale added: "Viera pushed me and then I push him, so I don't think it's red. I want to ask my colleagues and my coach for forgiveness."
The draw meant Madrid was unable to retake top spot in LaLiga, with rivals Barcelona ahead by a point after their earlier thrashing of Sporting Gijon.
But Bale is eager to move on, looking ahead to a trip to Eibar and meeting with Napoli in the Champions League.
"Now comes a difficult match in the field of Eibar and only two days later comes the game in the Champions League," he said.
Fantastic news! Fernando @Torres has been discharged and has left the hospital

Fernando Torres released from hospital following sickening head injury
Fernando Torres has been released from hospital following a sickening head injury sustained during Atlético Madrid’s 1-1 draw at Deportivo La Coruña on Thursday that left him unconscious.
Atlético says a CT scan did not reveal any damage to the forward’s head or neck. However, doctors have ordered the 32-year-old to wait 48 hours before practicing or playing again.
Torres collapsed and lost consciousness after striking his head on the ground as he fell following an aerial clash with the Deportivo midfielder Alex Bergantiños in the 85th minute of Thursday’s contest at the Riazor. The striker was assisted for several minutes by doctors before being taken off on a stretcher and transferred to a hospital.

England aim to lay ICC Champions Trophy marker in West Indies ODI series
England's bid to get their 50-over form back on track for this summer's Sky LiveICC Champions Trophy begins in Antigua on Friday when Eoin Morgan leads his side out in the first of three one-day internationals against the West Indies.
The tourists will start the series as favourites despite their 2-1 loss to India over the winter and their early exit in the 2015 World Cup, where they failed to get past the group stage.
However, under Morgan they continue to play a positive brand of cricket and have clear ambitions of improving their current ODI ranking of fifth in the world. England go into the first ODI off the back of contrasting victories in their two warm-up games, racking up 379-8 over a Vice Chancellor's XI in the opener before surviving a dramatic collapse to get across the line by just two wickets in the follow-up match against a President's XIEngland's batting line-up is not at full strength due to the absence of Alex Hales, who continues to recover from a hand injury.Sam Billings appears most likely to face the new ball alongside Jason Roy on Friday even though the Kent opener failed to make significant runs in either warm-up match in St Kitts, while Jonny Bairstow top-scored with 86 on Monday.Hales, is, however likely to be in the frame for the series finale in Barbados on March 9.On the bowling front, England have summoned Tom Curran from the Lions tour of Sri Lanka to replace fast-medium bowler Jake Ball, who picked up a knee injury in the second warm-up match and is ruled out. With the surface at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound expected to be friendly for spinners, the form and effectiveness of slow bowlers Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid will again come under close scrutiny, just as in India. West Indies remain under pressure to reverse a run of poor form that could see them facing the indignity of having to qualify for the next World Cup in 2019.
The top eight teams in the International Cricket Council ODI rankings at the end of September 2017 automatically advance to the event in England.
West Indies - struggling in ninth spot three points behind Pakistan and a further two adrift of Bangladesh - have only this series, a return duel in England in September and, critically, three matches against Pakistan in the Caribbean in April to make the cut.
